Import/Export

Functionality to import data into and/or export data out of Sitefinity from the modules is available on each content type maintenance. In some cases, the process supports the import/export of data from the content type including the relation with other content types that are already created.  For example, the import/export of Products allows you to import Product information and its relation with existing Attribute Values.

Scheduled tasks are responsible to execute the import/export processes once the user submits the action. If the site is configured to send emails, the Task Manager-Email subscriber (Settings Module) and the user that submitted the action will receive an email once the process is completed.

Import: The option to import content is displayed on the content type list view. When the user clicks on the Import action import modal is displayed.  On the import modal, you can download the import template and set up the import process. To import content the user must select an Excel file with the information. The maximum file size will be determined by the following Sitefinity setting: Administration|Settings|Advanced|Libraries|Documents|Maximum Allowed Size. If the value is set to 0, then the maximum size is not limited.

If the Excel template has more than two sheets, an “All” checkbox is displayed in the section “Section(s) to import”. The Excel sheet names should not be edited and must match the import template sheets. If the names do not match, the process ignores these sheets. Each excel sheet column header has a unique identifier which makes a column rename and reorder possible. The import will process only the selected sections and ignores the unselected sheets. To continue, the user must select at least one of the sections.

Once the file is selected and the options configured, click on the button “Done” and a task will be created. The import process runs in the background using a scheduled task. The task status can be checked in SmarterCommerce |Task.  You can click on the task and see the executions displayed. In the execution row click on Actions|Download to download the excel file report with the import messages.

Import Images: There are two notes related to the import images process: Image library and Image Title match type.  Please note images will be related in the same sequence they were specified in the import file.

If the Content Type that is going to be imported has related images, and the user selects to import images, then the Image Library option is displayed. You must select the library where the images will be stored or a “Search images in subfolders” option should be enabled. In this case the import process will search images in all subfolders of the selected image library.

When the content type allows the association of multiple images, you must select the match type. There are two ways to relate images. First is Exact Match. In this case the image title that is specified in the import file should be the same as the Image Title stored in Sitefinity. Second is Starts With. In this case the Image Title specified in the import template will be associated.

Export: The export process generates an Excel file with the selected content. You can export a single row or multiple rows. In both scenarios (single or multiple export), all the content related to the selected records will be exported including children, relations, translations, images relations, etc.  You receive an email when the export process finished. The task status can be checked in SmarterCommerce |Task.  You can click on the task and see the executions displayed. In the execution row click on Actions|Download to download the excel.
